Not every beach along the bay offers the same experience. Some stretches stay calm and shallow, popular with families and small children, while others catch a bit more wind and swell, drawing a slightly different crowd altogether depending on the day. Families with very young children in particular tend to seek out the calmest, most sheltered stretches available nearby.
Locals tend to develop firm loyalty to a particular stretch, chosen for its parking, its shade or simply long familiarity, and will happily explain at length why their preferred spot suits a summer afternoon better than the one just around the point. Regulars sometimes drive straight past a closer beach simply to reach the particular stretch they have grown attached to.
This variety across a relatively short stretch of coastline means there is usually a suitable spot regardless of mood or weather, a flexibility locals rely on more than they perhaps realise until a visitor asks which beach is actually the best. Even locals who rarely swim still seem to know which beach suits which mood, almost by instinct.
