As the year winds down, temporary stalls begin appearing in car parks and vacant shopfronts, selling gifts, decorations and seasonal treats for the few short weeks before the holidays, then vanishing again almost as quickly as they arrived. Landlords with an otherwise empty shopfront often welcome these short term tenants, glad to see some activity return before the new year.
Locals treat the appearance of these stalls as a reliable seasonal marker, a sign that the year is genuinely drawing to a close regardless of what the actual date on the calendar happens to say. Locals sometimes plan an entire shopping trip specifically around browsing these temporary stalls before committing to anything more conventional.
Because the stalls are temporary by nature, shopping at them carries a certain urgency, a sense that whatever catches your eye should probably be bought now rather than left for a return visit that may not be possible. By the time the new year properly begins, most of these stalls have already vanished as quietly as they first appeared.
