Racing has a history here stretching back almost as far as the city itself, with tracks established not long after the earliest streets were surveyed. That long tradition still shows in how comfortably the sport sits alongside football and cricket in the local sporting calendar.
Beyond the well known spring meetings, racing runs quietly through the year at suburban tracks, drawing a loyal, more low key crowd less interested in fashion than in the form guide and the simple pleasure of a day spent outdoors. These smaller meetings rarely draw much outside attention, yet they remain genuinely well attended by dedicated locals.
For many locals, an interest in racing gets passed down within families much like football does, a shared afternoon at the track or in front of a television becoming its own small, recurring tradition across generations. Grandparents and grandchildren alike can often be found at the same track, separated by generations but united by the same modest ritual.
