Cafe hopping as a Saturday itinerary

For a certain kind of local, a Saturday morning is planned less around a single destination than a loose sequence of cafes, one for the first coffee, another for something to eat, perhaps a third simply because it happens to be on the way. Friends planning one of these mornings together sometimes negotiate the route almost as carefully as any formal itinerary, debating each stop in advance.

This habit treats coffee less as a single transaction than an excuse to structure an entire morning, each stop offering its own small change of scenery and pace rather than settling for one long stay in a single spot. A single Saturday might easily cover three or four separate cafes, each contributing only a small part to the overall outing.

Locals who cafe hop regularly tend to build up a genuinely detailed mental map of a neighbourhood's options, ready with an opinion on which spot suits which particular mood or hour of the morning. Visitors unfamiliar with the habit sometimes find it puzzling, unable to understand why anyone would deliberately fragment a single meal this way.
