On certain still autumn mornings, a soft fog settles low over the river, blurring the outlines of bridges and buildings into pale, indistinct shapes that only sharpen gradually as the sun slowly burns the mist away. Photographers chasing this particular light sometimes return to the same spot morning after morning, waiting patiently for the right conditions to align.

Early walkers and rowers on the water at this hour experience the city in an unusually quiet, muted form, sound travelling differently through the fog, familiar landmarks briefly transformed into something almost unrecognisable. Sound seems to travel differently through fog, muffled and strange, adding to the sense of a familiar place briefly transformed.

By the time most of the city is properly awake, the fog has usually cleared entirely, leaving behind no trace of the brief, atmospheric transformation that only the earliest risers happened to witness that particular morning. Locals who happen to catch it by chance often describe the experience as oddly memorable despite how quickly it passes.
